NRC finds 97 percent of nuclear plants perform in top tiers of safety

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) recently released mid-cycle assessment found that 96 out of 99 nuclear plants across the nation scored in the highest two performance categories.

“These assessment letters are part of our annual assessment process, involving a thorough review of plant performance, assessing any changes needed, and communicating those results,” NRC Division of Inspection and Regional Support Office Director Chris Miller said. “They are part of the Reactor Oversight Process the NRC uses to ensure our nation’s nuclear generation facilities are safe.”

Of the 99 reactors assessed, 87 were in 100 percent compliance with safety and security performance objectives, as defined in the NRC’s baseline inspection program. Nine reactors, however, need to resolve one or two issues pertaining to low safety significance.

There were no reactors in the third performance category, but three reactors ranked in the fourth performance category and require increased oversight. These reactors include the Arkansas Nuclear One 1 and 2 reactors in Arkansas and the Pilgrim reactor in Massachusetts.

Per the request of NRC staff, this will be the last assessment period to use this review protocol. To enhance efficiency and efficacy, the NRC will proceed with ongoing routine assessments, annual assessments and continuous assessment activities.
