TVA to deliberate on future of Bellefonte Nuclear Plant site in Alabama

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) confirmed the receipt of public comments last week to determine the future of the incomplete Bellefonte Nuclear Plant site located near Hollywood, Alabama.

The Bellefonte Nuclear Plant Site remained unfinished when the TVA’s 2015 Integrated Resource Plan discovered that the facility might too be large for the community. The site fills 1,600 acres and contains two unfinished nuclear units, transmission switchyards, warehouses, support structures and parking lots.

The property could be ideal for residential, industrial or commercial uses, leading TVA leaders to ask for public input to determine what community members and stakeholders wanted to see the property become.

Public comments will be considered during upcoming deliberation to determine if the site should be sold or repurposed. The TVA board of directors and leadership will debate the future of the site at the upcoming TVA board meeting in Paris, Tennessee, on May 5. If board members determine that the site will be sold, it will likely be offered through a public auction as outlined in the TVA Act, Section 31.
