Representatives of Consumers Energy joined community leaders from Rogers City and Harrisville, Michigan, last week to oversee installation of new electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the state’s northeast region.

“Electric vehicles are the future for Michigan, and that future is coming into focus quickly. We’re thrilled to see Harrisville and Rogers City become EV hubs, helping the vision of convenient, accessible EV ownership become a reality for everyone,” Lauren Youngdahl Snyder, Consumers Energy’s vice president of customer experience, said. “Consumers Energy is excited to help both communities put chargers in place that are powering EVs today.”

The new chargers, viewed as a connecting point for drivers from these communities, were installed at the Rogers City Farmers Market and the Harrisville harbor. The addition in Rogers City is particularly notable for its fast-charging capabilities, which make it one of 30 in the state capable of fully powering an electric vehicle battery in less than an hour.

“Rogers City is grateful to Consumers Energy for the installation of extremely fast EV charging stations in the heart of our downtown,” Rogers City Mayor Scott McLennan said. “The new fast chargers make it possible for travelers to stop off and quickly charge their vehicles while also visiting our beautiful downtown.”

For Consumers, Michigan’s largest energy provider, the new chargers represent another step toward a goal of deploying more than 2,000 chargers at homes and businesses over the next three years. Such plans include 200 fast-charging locations, and are supported by Michigan automakers’ commitments to electrifying their vehicles.

For communities such as Harrisville and Rogers City, they can mean something more personal.

“Harrisville is moving into a whole new realm of tourism and commerce,” Jacquelyn Schwanz, Harrisville’s alderwoman in charge of green initiatives, said. “Having the convenience of EV charging stations at one of the most beautiful locations within our city will help bring new visitors to our small town. New visitors will facilitate an increase in shopping and eating at our local businesses and hopefully reinvigorate the Sunrise Side. We are looking forward to further change and development in the realm of clean energy, making our piece of Michigan even greener.”
