U.S. and Israel to collaborate on clean energy technology research and development

Israeli Minister of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Resources Dr. Yuval Steinitz and U.S. Secretary of Energy Dr. Ernest Moniz signed an agreement on Monday reaffirming their commitment to clean energy research and development.

The agreement signed was an amendment to an existing agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy and the Israeli Ministry of National Infrastructure to collaborate on eco-friendly practices for water and energy security within Israel and the United States.

“Today, our nations further solidified our ongoing cooperation,” Moniz said. “The U.S. and Israel will continue to foster research and development, drive down the costs of clean energy technologies and encourage collaboration between our nations’ top energy scientists.”

The agreement will work towards enhanced technologies for fossil alternative fuels, and natural gas; updated grid technology; energy and water security against physical and cyber threats; and water desalination and treatment. The initiative keeps environmental protection at its core and both Moniz and Steinitz expressed commitment to continue working together to meet this end.

The initiative also called for the continued support of the Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation and the Israel-US Binational Science Foundation (BSF) through 2024. It also encouraged collaboration between the U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories and Israeli energy researchers.
