NV Energy exceeds renewable energy goals

NV Energy on Tuesday reported it surpassed its renewable energy goal of 20 percent last year, achieving a 31.3 percent renewable energy credit level in northern Nevada and a 21.2 percent level in southern Nevada.

The achievement was filed in NV Energy’s 2015 Renewable Portfolio Standard Annual Report. The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada mandates that all energy providers in the state must meet a 20 percent renewable energy level of credit based on total credit sales reports.

Kevin Geraghty, NV Energy’s VP of energy supply, said that the company will continue to strive for excellence, and that its primary motivation is environmental responsibility and keeping costs affordable for consumers.

“In the past five years we’ve more than doubled our renewable energy capacity,” Geraghty said. “And, unlike some other states, we’ve managed to do that with rates that are lower today than they were five years ago. Where coal was more than 40 percent of the energy resources we owned a decade ago, today only about 10 percent of our generating resources use coal. And, by the end of 2019, we will no longer use any coal-fueled generation in southern Nevada and by 2025 for Northern Nevada.”

NV Energy also supports 12 solar fields capable of supporting a dozen communities or more, a large wind farm and biomass projects. Such projects will assist in the company’s transition to renewable energy in the state while helping it to remain compliant with the Nevada Renewable Portfolio Standard, which will increase its mandate to 22 percent by 2020 and 25 percent by 2025.
