Commissioners from the Mississippi Public Service Commission (PSC) attended the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday of Entergy’s Brookhaven Solar Station, one of three solar power stations in the state committed to providing affordable alternative energy to residents.

The development of the Brookhaven Solar Station is part of Mississippi’s Bright Future pilot program, which seeks to expand solar energy resources in the state. The station will have approximately 3,720 solar panels and is expected to produce 500 kilowatts of electricity. In combination with the other two stations, located in Hinds and Desoto Counties, Mississippi is expected to produce 1,500 kilowatts of energy from solar power stations – enough energy to power 175 homes.

“Entergy’s Brookhaven Solar Station is another important step in expanding alternative energy resources to Mississippi utility ratepayers,” Central District Commissioner Cecil Brown said. “I happily join my commission colleagues in thanking Entergy for its commitment to this project and look forward to continuing the Commission’s commitment to ensuring Mississippians’ access to reliable, affordable electricity in the future.”

PSC Chairman Brandon Presley also expressed support for the new station, saying that regardless of the price of gas, solar energy can supply an affordable alternative for customers. Presley expressed pride for the new development of solar facilities in the state, and commended other co-ops for making huge strides towards the expansion of alternative energy resources.
