The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) announced on Wednesday that the #MillionSolarStrong campaign has gained widespread support, with more than 70 organizations recently signing an official declaration to prioritize solar energy in the U.S. energy portfolio.

“American leaders, entrepreneurs and organizations across the country have come together to publicly recognize solar as part of the mainstream energy discussion, and that’s not something that can be easily ignored,” SEIA President and CEO Rhone Resch said. “While it took us 40 years to hit one million U.S. solar installations, we’re expected to hit 2 million within the next two years. Solar energy isn’t just here to stay, it’s rapidly growing because of the hardworking American families who have made it clear they want access to clean, affordable, reliable electricity.”

The George Washington Solar Institute released a recent report that found that the collective electricity produced by existing solar energy systems can generate enough electricity to power the entire state of Pennsylvania. The report also found that the industry exhibited rapid job growth, with one in every 83 jobs created last year coming from the solar industry.

Among the initiative’s supporters are President Barack Obama, the Young Conservatives for Energy Reform, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the National Electrical Contractors Association.
