Secretary of Energy Rick Perry toured the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois, earlier this week and led a meeting with lab employees and visiting scientists.
“DOE’s 17 laboratories are the crown jewels of American science,” Perry said. “As the nation’s leading particle physics lab, Fermilab plays a vital role in bringing the national and international high-energy physics community together in pursuit of great discoveries. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, for instance, are a terrific example of continued U.S. leadership in this community.”
Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL), a former Fermilab physicist, joined Perry on the tour of the facility. The trip marked Perry’s first visit to the facility since assuming office.
Perry emphasized the importance of commercializing the results of the lab’s research, noting that this could help secure funding for the United States’ laboratories and experiments. Perry said that he sees himself as an advocate for the national laboratories.
“I will do my best to be a good and a cogent storyteller of what happens in places like Fermilab,” Perry said.
