Department of Energy funding $1.87 million in industry projects

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Manufacturing Office recently announced it will provide $1.87 million in funding for seven industry projects designed to utilize DOE’s high-performance computing (HPC) resources and expertise to advance U.S. manufacturing and clean-energy technologies.

Participants are tasked with finding solutions to issues such as maintaining American competitiveness, reducing emissions, and improving energy efficiency using HPC.

The funding is through the DOE’s HPC4Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) program. The program was founded in 2015 and has issued $15 million in funding to 47 private-public projects. This is the fourth round of awardees.

At least 20 percent of the project’s budget is from contributions by industry partners.

The program teams U.S. manufacturers with DOE’s national laboratories. HPC services are provided by the DOE’s Advanced Scientific Computing Research Program and through allocations to other laboratories.

“We are excited that HPC is gaining traction in the manufacturing section, as evidenced by the large number of proposals received in this solicitation — a 50 percent increase compared to previous solicitations,” Lori Diachin, director of the HPC4Mfg program, said. “This led to an outstanding set of funded projects.”

The program is led by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
