EEI, Association of Power Utilities of Africa to collaborate on development of African power sector
The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to collaborate to support the continued development of African electric companies.
The two organizations will seek to facilitate the formation of high-performing African electric companies with sustainable business models and cleaner, more efficient energy systems.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to work together with our partners in Africa on some of the most pressing issues facing the electric power industry worldwide,” EEI President Tom Kuhn said. “We are committed to working with the Association of Power Utilities of Africa to implement this Memorandum of Understanding and, ultimately, to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Exchange, as well as to take action to accelerate electric power sector development in Africa.”
EEI and APUA will work to strengthen APUA’s key strategic operational areas and encourage participation in the Africa Utility Power Sector Exchange (AUPSE), which EEI and the U.S. Department of State launched in April 2017.
AUPSE seeks to advance electric power sector reform and development in underdeveloped markets by encouraging the exchange of best practices and ideas for the management of electric companies.

Mundende, president of APUA and managing director of Zambian electricity company, ZESCO Limited Ltd, said. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to strengthen our partnership with EEI, build the AUPSE, and ultimately deliver a brighter, more sustainable energy future for Africa.”
