Appalachian Power installing Advanced Metering Infrastructure meters in Roanoke and Lynchburg, Virginia

Appalachian Power began this month installing 130,000 Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters in the Roanoke and Lynchburg areas of Virginia.

The new meters will feature radio frequency and cell phone technology to transmit meter readings directly to the company. This remote meter reading technology will eliminate the need for a company truck to drive by the home to obtain meter readings as is required with the current radio frequency meters.

The AMI meters will also enable the company to remotely conduct some service needs such as connects and disconnects and more quickly detect outages.

An authorized contractor for Appalachian Power and crews are installing the meters. Installation generally takes approximately 15 minutes and requires a brief power outage during the installation.

Last year, Appalachian Power installed 54,000 meters in the Christiansburg, Blacksburg, and Lynchburg areas.
