Dominion Voltage joins with Choptank Electric Cooperative on voltage optimization

In an effort to keep rates low for its 54,000 members, the Choptank Electric Cooperative of Maryland has signed a contract with Dominion Energy to deploy a new voltage optimization (VVO) solution known as Edge.

The automated voltage control will, in theory, add to the cooperative’s managing capacity and overall energy efficiency, according to Todd Headlee, executive director of DVI. It’s meant to reduce operating expenses and create efficiency savings. A demonstration of the new system will be made at the TechAdvantage conference next week in Tennessee.

“As an electric cooperative we are always looking for ways to operate our system more efficiently and keep our rates low,” Mike Wheatley, president and CEO of Choptank Electric Cooperative, said. “Voltage optimization was an obvious next step in our grid modernization efforts after having made the investment in AMI. Using DVI’s proven EDGE® VVO solution will allow us to reduce our system peak and improve operating expenses through lower demand charges.”

The system will be fully deployed to all of Choptank’s members.
