Florida’s Gulf Power is turning increasingly to wind energy to power its customers, and as the second anniversary of its entrance into that renewable market rolls around, wind energy has supplied enough to power more than 131,000 of its customers’ homes.

“Wind marked a major step forward in our promise to an efficient and reliable energy future,” Kimberly Blair, Gulf Power spokesperson, said. “By using a balanced energy mix that includes smart renewable energy like Kingfisher Wind Farm, our customers can count on us for their energy needs.”

Use of wind over the last two years has helped significantly in Gulf Power’s efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 50 percent over the past 10 years. In that time, wind power has grown to represent 11 percent of Gulf Power’s energy mix, including the aforementioned Kingfisher Farm.

The American Wind Energy Association currently predicts the United States as a whole to be on track to 10 percent wind energy dependence by 2020. With it could come up to $85 billion in economic activity and 50,000 jobs.
