University of Pittsburgh hosts smart energy city conference

The University of Pittsburgh held this week at its Energy Innovation Center a workshop to discuss smart city, energy innovation, and urban development initiatives and support a recent partnership with the Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate Change.

The University recently signed a partnership agreement with the Danish agency to exchange ideas and plans for implementing energy infrastructure and smart city technologies.

The conference brought together domestic and international experts to discuss where Denmark and the United States are in energy planning and what they can learn from each other as well as to begin planning a roadmap for implementation of new energy system designs.

Representatives from the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) attended the workshop where they discussed recent research and approaches for helping Pittsburgh and Denmark in their energy innovation and urban development efforts.

NETL signed a memorandum of understanding with Pittsburgh in 2016 to support its energy initiatives. NETL supported the city’s Smart City Challenge Grant and helped it to secure a $10.8 million Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to implement intelligent systems technology.
