A rate reduction request from Piedmont Natural Gas has been filed with the North Carolina Utilities Commission, and if approved, could see average residential customers’ monthly bills drop by about $2.51.

Reductions would be engaged in several areas, though. While residential bills would decrease by $0.51 per dekatherm, small general service bills would also go down by $0.27 per dekatherm, and medium general service by $0.24. This is part of a semiannual adjustment the company makes twice yearly, on April 1 and Nov. 1, which allows the company to appropriately recover what it needs to operate its system reliably and safely.

If approved, the rate decrease would take effect on April 1.

The semiannual rate adjustment differs from occasional rate adjustments, which reflect changes in the commodity price of natural gas that Piedmont purchases for its customers.
