U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry recently announced the selection of 69 small business in 26 states for 82 Phase II research and development grants totaling $99 million.

The awards are funded through the Department of Energy (DOE) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The median Phase II award is $1,000,000 for a period of two years.

The selected small businesses demonstrated the technical feasibility of their projects during Phase I of the program and then competed for prototype or processes development funding during Phase II. Prior Phase II awardees also competed for sequential Phase II awards to continue prototype and process development.

The research and development programs that provided funding include the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing, the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Office of Biological and Environmental Research and the Office of Nuclear Physics.

Projects include a photonic memory controller module, a post-combustion carbon capture system, a portable low-power soil gas analyzer and a radiation-hardened high-speed camera system for accelerator beam diagnostics.
