Indiana Michigan Power announces project to rebuild approximately 46 miles of transmission line

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) recently announced an estimated $92 million project that will rebuild approximately 46 miles of 138-kilovolt (kV) line and replacing lattice structures with steel monopoles.

The Granger-Benton Harbor Transmission Line Rebuild Project includes transmission line heading north from Granger, Indiana, into the St. Joseph and Benton Harbor areas of Michigan. The project will use the company’s existing right-of-way for a majority of the rebuilt transmission line.

Construction will occur in four phases. The first will begin in Granger, Indiana, in Spring 2019 and reach Niles, Michigan, in early 2020. The final stage, which will take place in the Benton Harbor area, is scheduled for completion in Fall 2021.

I&M crews and contractors will conduct survey work along the line route through the end of the year. Pre-construction activities are anticipated to begin next spring, and the project is expected to be fully completed in early 2022.

Right-of-way agents will communicate with landowners along the line route. The project website includes a Virtual Open House and a searchable map of the project area.
