For the second year, three of Rocky Mountain Power’s plants in Utah received recognition for operational excellence through the Generation Knowledge Service (GKS) Plant Operational Excellence Awards.
The awards recognize coal-fired and combined cycle power plants for cost and operational management, improved performance and reliability, and safety. Hunter Power Station near Castle Dale, Utah; the Huntington Power Station near Huntington, Utah; and the Currant Creek Power Station near Mona, Utah, were all so honored.
“The challenges coal and natural gas power plants face today are phenomenal,” Dale Probasco, managing director of Global Generation Services at Navigant, said. “Revenue for coal power plants has dropped precipitously in the last few years placing enormous demands to reduce spending while maintaining reliability. Combined cycle plants are also facing revenue challenges while meeting reliability demands in markets that use high levels of variable resources. The level of commitment shown by the people operating these plants demonstrates the dedication they have toward meeting the energy needs of their customers.”
The Hunter plant was recognized as the top performer in the coal-fired category this year with Huntington coming in as runner-up, flipping the results from the previous year. Currant was recognized as the top natural gas plant in the country for the combined cycle category.
“The operational excellence at our Hunter, Huntington and Currant Creek plants is the backbone of our system —and allows us the flexibility to deliver power from a diverse mix of resources, including renewable energy,” Cindy Crane, CEO of Rocky Mountain Power, said. “We’re very proud of the professionalism of our teams at these plants. Their ingenuity, hard work, and dedication to each other’s safety creates great value for our customers.”
The awards are run by Navigant and based on a review of cost and performance data over the most recent five-year period.
