Brien Sheahan, chairman and CEO of the Illinois Commerce Commission, has been appointed to the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy Advisory Committee (NEAC) by Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

In his new role, Sheahan will provide his expertise and insight on innovation and modernization of U.S. utility infrastructure and regulations. He will be one of a collection of figures tasked with meeting two to three times a year — without compensation — to advise the Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy. Sheahan’s term will last until Dec. 31, 2019.

“I would like to thank Secretary Perry for the opportunity to serve on this important committee,” Sheahan said. “This is a pivotal time for the nuclear energy industry. Illinois leads the nation in terms of the number of reactors and generating capacity from nuclear power and recent state policy changes affirm strong support for maintaining this essential zero carbon resource. I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with the other members of the committee and am honored to have been chosen.”

The NEAC was founded in 1998 as an independent advisor to the Office of Nuclear Energy. They tackle scientific, commercial, technical and programmatic issues, including review and recommendations related to the DOE’s nuclear energy programs.
