Florida PSC considers report on reducing outages, restoration times linked to hurricanes

To reduce damage and recovery times surrounding hurricanes, the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) will take time this month to consider a draft report on Electric Utility Hurricane Preparedness and Restoration Actions.

The report stems from a collection of data analysis, coupled with insights from a two-day workshop in May. Data started being gathered as far back as last October, though, when the Commission created a docket to collect and analyze forensics related to transmission and distribution facilities. Utilities were subsequently asked to provide data for the report, while input was sought from consumers.

Data from utilities covered preparation and restoration processes, the impacts storms have had on their facilities and customer communications surrounding the 2016 and 2017 hurricane seasons, which represented the first major storm landfalls in Florida in years. Local governments and other stakeholders also contributed.
