Illinois nuclear station concludes multi-million dollar expansion effort

The Quad Cities Generating Station in Cordova, Illinois, completed its site expansion this week, adding an employee training center.

The facility is owned by Exelon Generation, and in the process of construction, the company’s growth-minded focus brought in 600 jobs for contractors, laborers, and suppliers. It was the crowning piece of some $20 million put into improving the facility over the last year, with construction led by Chicago-based Burling Builders, Inc.

“This ribbon cutting is more than just the opening of our newly expanded Professional Learning Center; it represents the next chapter in Quad Cities’ bright future,” Ken Ohr, site vice president, said. “June 2018 was the exact month Quad Cities was to be shut down, but thanks to Gov. Rauner, legislative leaders, and our many local supporters, we continue to deliver carbon-free power and good-paying jobs for Illinois families.”

While the training facility was the focus in recent days, Quad Cities has also, in recent years, engaged in a number of remodels and upgrades, including construction of a new maintenance facility. They also intend to expand the station’s used fuel storage pad.

The station currently hosts two reactors that can produce more than 1,900 megawatts of electricity.
