NorthWestern Energy investigating cost for capacity projects in Montana

The NorthWestern Energy Corporation issued a request for information (RFI) this week to determine capacity product potential in Montana.

Such inquiries are now required under Montana state law, with evaluation of electric supply being conducted alongside demand-side planning to determine the lowest cost and lowest risk alternatives for the energy companies are providing. The Montana Public Service Commission (MPSC) requested that NorthWestern solicit info on available capacity resource alternatives for its 2018 plan.

Specifically, but not restricted to, NorthWestern is looking for information linked to energy generation, energy storage, and demand response products. These will be tied to the company’s servicing of peak demand periods. The company has provided guidelines for the sort of capacity products it is particularly interested in, however.

Commenters must submit their ideas by July 30, 2018.
