Piedmont Natural Gas is building a new facility in North Carolina, which is expected to provide as much as $800,000 to $1 million in tax revenue annually to Robeson County.

Piedmont estimates as many as 400 local construction jobs could be created by the project, with 10 to 12 permanent jobs following completion and activation of its liquefied natural gas operations. Company representatives said the facility would guarantee a cost-effective, reliable supply during peak heating needs when extremely low temperatures lead to unusually high natural gas demand.

“This project marks an important economic development opportunity for our county, and we’re looking forward to working with Piedmont Natural Gas in an open, transparent manner throughout this process,” Robeson County Manager Ricky Harris said.

Piedmont’s new facility will cover approximately 50 acres once construction is completed. Currently, it is expected to take $250 million over the course of the project, which is expected to begin in 2019 and conclude sometime around the summer of 2021. It will bolster the company’s position in the South, where it maintains operations in the Carolinas and Tennessee.

“Piedmont has safely operated LNG facilities for more than 40 years,” Frank Yoho, president of Piedmont’s natural gas operations, said. “As always, our commitment to safety will be unwavering throughout the facility’s construction process and its operation.”
