Small businesses receive DoE grants to support national, energy security

Eighty small businesses in 26 states will receive a total of $95 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) to advance projects that support national and energy security, the agency announced on Monday.

The small businesses selected for phase II research and development funding through the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. Phase I funding required the businesses to compete for resources to develop prototypes or process development.

“Small businesses play a major role in spurring innovation and creating jobs in the U.S. economy,” the agency stated. “The SBIR and STTR programs were created by Congress to leverage small businesses to advance innovation at federal agencies.”

Funding was awarded to projects across a range of domains, including nuclear nonproliferation, electricity delivery and energy reliability, energy efficiency and renewable energy, fossil energy, fusion energy sciences, high energy physics and nuclear energy, The median grant award was $1 million.
