Customers of Duke Energy Progress in South Carolina will see a decrease in their rates due to energy saving programs and initiatives launched by the company.

Through Duke’s energy-efficiency programs and assistance for low-income customers, energy consumption has been reduced by about 2.9 billion kilowatt hours (kWh). That’s roughly enough energy to power more than 240,000 average homes for a year, the company said.

As a result, the average residential Duke Energy Progress customer using 1,000 kWh per month of energy saw a decrease of $2.32 in their monthly bills. The rates have dropped primarily because of the collection of previously under-recovered costs that were included in prior year rates, the company explained. The impact will vary for non-residential customers based on the opt-out elections made by the customer.
Duke Energy Progress filed with the Public Service Commission of South Carolina (PSCSC) to recover the costs of implementing these energy efficiency programs and providing incentives to customers that have allowed them to save money.

Duke Energy Progress serves about 168,000 customers in northeastern South Carolina, including Darlington, Florence, and Sumter counties. Duke Energy Progress is a subsidiary of Duke Energy, one of the largest energy holding companies in the United States, with a generating capacity of 49,500 megawatts.
