Florida Public Service Commissioner (PSC) Julie Brown was recently appointed to the Southern States Energy Board (SSEB) Blue Ribbon Task Force, a project in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to strategize electric energy policy and a regulatory framework in Puerto Rico.

SSEB, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló Nevares, Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz and House Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Núñez appointed Brown to the task force.

“The PSC actively works with Florida’s electric utilities to continue improving storm preparation, restoration, and grid reliability,” Brown said. “I am honored to share Florida’s experiences, including our utilities’ best practices, that will assist Puerto Rican officials as they develop their future energy plan.”

The goals of the task force include working with Puerto Rico’s governor and legislature to develop a reliable, affordable and sustainable electric grid for the commonwealth as well as developing a policy and legal, regulatory framework to potentially privatize its energy grid system.

Brown has worked with Florida utilities before and after hurricanes and has experience on national energy committees.

She serves on the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Committee on Gas, Subcommittee on Nuclear Issues-Waste Disposal and Presidential Natural Gas Access and Expansion Task Force. She also serves on the NARUC-U.S. Department of Energy Natural Gas Infrastructure Modernization Partnership, which supports investments in natural gas infrastructure modernization and repairs.
