Con Edison customers set new high for power demand for 2018

Con Edison provided 12,766 megawatts (MW) of electricity at 5 p.m. on Sept. 6 to its customers in New York City and Westchester County, New York, a new high for the company for 2018.

The previous 2018 high was 12,635 MW at 5 p.m. on August 29. The all-time high of 13,322 MW was set at 5 p.m. on July 19, 2013.

“Con Edison urges customers to conserve energy and save money by using energy wisely during hot spells,” the company said in a news release. “Customers can lower their bills by using air conditioning and other appliances efficiently.”

Con Edison offered various tips for conserving energy, such as running fans to improve air circulation and keeping air conditioner filters clean. It also encouraged its customers to participate in its energy-efficiency programs, report outages and stay away from downed power lines.

The company noted that it has crews ready to respond to any power outages that occur. High power demand and hot air temperatures can cause electrical cables to overheat, Con Edison said.
