Dominion Energy wins contract to operate electric system at Fort Jackson, S.C.

The U.S. Army awarded a subsidiary of Dominion Energy a contract to operate the electric utility system for Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

The contract was awarded to Dominion Privatization South Carolina, which will own, operate, and maintain Fort Jackson’s electric system for the 50-year contract period. The company will acquire Fort Jackson’s utility assets as part of the Army’s plan to sell its utility assets to upgrade on-base systems. The contract is valued at $142 million.

“We have a long tradition of working with the military,” Robert Blue, executive vice president at Dominion Energy, said. “Our company is consistently ranked among the top companies in the nation in helping veterans and their families find and keep jobs in the civilian workforce. This new contract to provide electric service gives us another layer of support we can directly provide to the men and women in the armed services.”

Dominion Energy will take over operation of the electric system at the base in April 2019. Since 2015 the company has invested more than $750 million in gas transmission and renewable energy projects in South Carolina. It is currently seeking approvals to merge with SCANA Corporation, a utility based in Cayce, S.C. that serves 1.1 million electric and gas customers in the state.

More than 36,000 soldiers attend basic training at Fort Jackson each year. It encompasses 52,000 acres of land or about 81 square miles.

Dominion, based in Richmond, Va., serves 6 million customers in 19 states.
