Dominion Energy filed an application Tuesday with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to renew the operating licenses for Surry Power Station, which is located in Surry County in southeastern Virginia, for an additional 20-year term.

“Our application to renew Surry Power Station’s licenses for another 20-year period is good news for our customers, the regional economy and the environment,” Dan Stoddard, Dominion Energy’s chief nuclear officer, said. “Our customers will benefit from continuing to receive safe, reliable, affordable, and clean electricity from the station through 2053.”

Under its current licenses, Surry Units 1 and 2 can continue to provide electricity to customers through 2032 and 2033, respectively. With renewed licenses, the units may operate to 2052 and 2053, respectively. The Surry units were initially licensed to operate for 40 years, and their licenses were renewed for 20 additional years of operation on March 20, 2003.

Dominion Energy also plans to pursue relicensing of two units at the North Anna Power Station in Louisa County, Virginia. The company could spend as much as $4 billion over the next decade on the relicensing program for the Surry and North Anna units.

The nuclear units at Surry Power Station are three-loop Westinghouse pressurized water reactors and are capable of providing 1,676 net megawatts.
