Ocean Renewable Power Company to receive $5.35 million for turbine technology update

Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) has been selected to receive $5.35 million in funding from the Department of Energy, according to an announcement on Wednesday by U.S. Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME).

“ORPC is a global leader in hydrokinetic energy, and this grant will help accelerate the company’s efforts to improve upon its tidal turbine technology,” Collins and King said. “By developing innovative and groundbreaking methods for generating clean, renewable energy, we will help ensure a reliable, affordable power supply, and that our environment is preserved for future generations. We look forward to continuing to support ORPC and its talented team of researchers as they work to develop its promising technology.”

ORPC will invest the funds in the incorporation of new technologies in its tidal turbine system, enhancing performance and efficiency. The new design will float the turbine nearer to the surface in order to take advantage of higher flow velocities and reduce installation costs.

“ORPC is thrilled to be selected by DOE for this significant award. It is a great testament to our superb technology and our amazing team,” ORPC President and CEO Chris Sauer said. “We look forward to commercializing our TidGen Power System in Maine collaborating with Eastport and Lubec, as well as with local contractors and service providers.”

The project will create work for local contractors and service providers, and ultimately lower the cost of energy generated by ORPC.
