American Electric Power (AEP) named Raja Sundararajan vice president of regulatory services on Thursday, where he will oversee AEP’s regulatory activities in 11 states, including working directly with regulatory commissions and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

“Raja has proven success in advancing transmission regulatory policy at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, with state regulators and in the regional transmission organizations where we operate,” AEP Chief Consumer Officer Bruce Evans said. “His collaborative leadership style, strategic vision and excellent technical skills will be incredibly important as the AEP regulatory team advocates for the right regulatory structures, rules and policies to support the electric utility model of the future and to meet the evolving needs and expectations of our customers.”

Before this position, Sundararajan served AEP as the vice president of Transmission Asset Strategy and Policy since March 2012. In that role, he worked directly with FERC, the Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), and regulatory commissions on regulatory issues and strategy. His responsibilities also included finance, right-of-way regulations and siting.

Sundararajan began his career with AEP in 2002 in the commercial operations division. Prior to serving AEP, he worked in treasury and corporate finance, including roles at Market Risk and other AEP subsidiaries and partner companies.
