Kentucky Public Service Commission renews Kentucky Power coal support program
The Kentucky Public Service Commission (KPSC) this week renewed Kentucky Power’s Coal Plus program, which is designed to bolster coal businesses and miners.
The program has been in effect since 2017, offering the utility the flexibility to offer special contracts to coal companies and coal processors, granting potential discounts. These retention efforts have now been expanded through Dec. 31, 2019.
“By renewing Coal Plus, Kentucky Power can continue to give coal companies greater short-term flexibility to take advantage of different rates,” Kentucky Power President Brett Mattison said. “Continuing the program is good for the coal industry and our customers.”
The Coal Plus program builds on Kentucky Power’s efforts to both retain and expand business in eastern Kentucky. It shares investments with the Economic Development Growth Grants, which have seen around $6 million invested into local communities, as funded through the Kentucky Economic Development Surcharge.
