I&M to upgrade east-central Indiana power grid

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) plans to rebuild approximately 20 miles of transmission line in Indiana’s Delaware and Grant counties, modernizing the grid supported therein.

The announcement means that for customers in the east-central portion of the state, new towers will soon be on hand, accompanied by road access construction and tree clearing. The towers will be shorter than their forebears, yet deliver electricity more efficiently. Classic steel lattice towers will be replaced by 85 foot Breakthrough Overhead Line Design (BOLD) structures supported by 100-foot right of way corridors.

It is I&M’s hopes that the upgrade will reduce the potential for power outages in the area, and speed up their recovery efforts when they do occur. Replacement of the line won’t begin until Fall 2020, though its conclusion is expected the following year. Preparation in the form of tree clearing and road access construction will begin as early as this year
