Consumers Energy awards General Motors $2.8M for energy efficiency updates

Thanks to energy-saving upgrades made to their facilities in Flint, Mich., last week General Motors was given $2.8 million from Consumers Energy.

It is not the first time, either. For the past decade, General Motors has received $13.3 million from Consumers Energy for upgrades rendered to its Michigan plants. The company is trying to encourage sustainability, and the effort yielded 21 energy-saving projects at General Motors’ Flint Assembly in the last year alone. In this project’s case, that included updates to the facility’s body shop and lighting upgrades.

“GM Flint Assembly’s commitment to sustainability enables us to develop an energy-efficient work environment for our team,” Michael Perez, GM Flint Assembly plant manager, said. “Our relationship with Consumers Energy allows us to continue to identify new opportunities to reduce and reuse energy.”

This is not the first environmentally conscious effort undertaken between the two partners in Flint, either. Earlier this year, General Motors signed onto a program to match its Flint operations with renewable energy, 100 percent. For the recent energy-saving upgrades alone, however, Consumers estimates that enough electricity will be saved to power around 1,600 homes and enough natural gas to heat another 550 homes.
