Louisville Gas & Electric to build new gas pipeline in Kentucky

Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E) is building a natural gas transmission pipeline to serve Bullitt County, Ky.

The pipeline, recently approved by the Kentucky Public Service Commission, will create an additional path for natural gas to reach residents and businesses in the area. The pipeline is expected to be about 12 miles long.

The company is currently working with property owners to purchase the remaining easements required for the project. It is also acquiring the necessary permits for the project and beginning the competitive bidding process for its construction contracts.

Once all easements have been acquired and the construction contractor is selected, a tentative timeline for pipeline construction will be determined. Once underway, construction will take about six to nine months.

While the final pipeline path has been determined, it is possible some necessary changes may be determined during construction.

LG&E said safety is its number one priority. The pipeline will be designed and constructed with materials and construction methods in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and pipeline safety regulations.

Further, LG&E officials said the pipeline will be tested prior to being put into service.  Through its Integrity Management Program, LG&E will also perform future inspections when the pipeline is in operation to verify its integrity.
