North America’s largest gas-processing facility expands operations in West Virginia

The MPLX Sherwood Gas Processing Complex in West Virginia’s Doddridge County recently expanded its processing capacity by another 400 million cubic feet per day.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony last week put the finishing touch of additions that push the plant past its already 2.2 billion cubic feet per day capacity to even greater heights. Gov. Jim Justice, who attended the ceremony, used the opportunity to highlight job and economic gains in the state.

“We should be so proud that we are a natural resource state, we shouldn’t run from the fact that we’re a natural resource state, we should be proud of our contribution to our nation,” Justice said. “The stuff that we have, as far as opportunities in the petrochemical industry and on and on and on, all of that needs to be located where the cheapest gas and the absolute best opportunity is, and that’s right here in West Virginia.”

The Sherwood Complex first went online in October 2012, and in the years since has spent millions investing in additional gas processing plants. As for Justice, the plant’s expansion is part of a welcome growth in energy for the region. Justice’s administration has consistently lobbied the Department of Energy to preserve coal operations that have been a traditional staple of the state, as well as for diversification efforts.
