National Grid seeks approval to raise delivery rates in New York

National Grid is seeking approval from the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) to update its natural gas delivery rates.

A typical residential heating customer on Long Island and the Rockaway Peninsula would see a $6.53 monthly delivery increase under this proposal. That equates to a 6.92 percent increase. A typical residential heating customer in New York City would see a $16.50 monthly delivery increase, a 17.78 percent increase. If approved, the new rates would take effect on April 1, 2020.

“The energy landscape has evolved since we filed for new delivery rates back in January 2016,” John Bruckner, president of National Grid in New York, said. “Technology and innovation are driving change and requires National Grid to provide dynamic, efficient, and interactive services to meet increased customer expectations. At the same time, our industry focus on gas safety and the need to decarbonize energy infrastructure demands that we rise to the challenge of delivering a safer, more sustainable energy future.”

The rate increases will allow National Grid to make further investments to modernize the gas infrastructure, replace 310 and 620 miles of aging pipeline for New York City and Long Island respectively, and meet regulatory requirements. It will also allow them to implement a new Customer Information System and other digital solutions.
