Wisconsin has opened a new combined dairy renewable natural gas (RNG) processing and interstate injection facility thanks to DTE Biomass Energy.

DTE pulls raw biogas from nearby partner farms and turning it into RNG. It also takes in RNG trucked from other dairy farm-based DTE facilities, injecting it into the interstate pipeline. In this way, DTE hopes to work with dairy farmers to reduce regional greenhouse gas emissions through the reduction of methane production caused by decomposing manure and to create sustainable vehicle fuel.

“This injection and RNG processing facility is an important milestone for us,” Kevin Dobson, vice president of business development for DTE Biomass Energy, said. “DTE’s dairy RNG production has grown tremendously over the last several months, and now we have a central location and efficient means for continuing the operation and growth of these and other dairy projects.”

Currently, DTE draws its biogas from five farms, which it processes through three DTE-owned and operated RNG facilities. By capturing the gas, DTE notes that not only does this reduce farms’ emissions footprint, it also opens another revenue stream for them and allows DTE to produce vehicle fuel for other uses.

The Newton, Wisconsin-based facility is just the beginning. DTE now has plans to build four additional RNG facilities in the state, which should begin processing RNG early next year.
