Illinois Energy company ComEd helped customers lower their energy bills by a combined $4 million this summer through its Peak Time Savings program.

The program helped nearly 300,000 families and individuals to manage their energy use – and save money — during six peak time hours when electricity is most in demand. Customers can enroll for free and do not have to participate if they do. But if they do participate, they will save money on energy.

How it works is, once enrolled, customers are notified of “peak time savings hours” by phone, text or email. They are also announced on Facebook and Twitter. During these hours, ComEd will credit a customer’s monthly bill based on how much they reduced their energy use during these peak hours, compared to what they used in the past. Participants can earn bill credits by taking simple actions, like raising their thermostats by a few degrees in the summer or waiting until the end of the peak time to use large appliances. ComEd offers a calculator to help customers estimate their potential cumulative earnings.

“We believe energy should be affordable and accessible to all customers,” Jane Park, ComEd’s senior vice president of customer operations, said. “This program is one of the many ways – including hourly pricing and offerings under the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program – that give our customers the power to choose how they use energy and save money on their energy bills.”

Since the program launched in 2015, customers earned more than $10.2 million in bill credits. It is another way that ComEd is using smart meters and smart grid technology to bring value customers.

Customers who would like to enroll in the summer 2020 peak time program can find more information at ComEd.com/PTS. ComEd, a unit of Exelon Corp., serves approximately 10 million electricity and natural gas customers in northern Illinois.
