Following approval by the government of Vietnam, the AES Corporation will build a 2.2 gigawatt combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant that will operate for at least the next 20 years.

“AES is committed to the country’s economic growth and energy transition through the development of gas and renewable infrastructure,” AES President and CEO Andrés Gluski said. “We appreciate that the Government of Vietnam has selected us to advance this critical project for the country.”

The 20-year contract with Vietnam will see the power plant likely reaching financial close in 2021, with commercial operations beginning in 2024. The plant itself will be called the Son My 2 plant and will be located in the nation’s south-central Binh Thuan province. Together with another facility — the 450 TBtu Son My LNG terminal — it will play two roles: diversifying Vietnam’s energy mix and working toward increasingly sustainable and affordable electricity.

With approval from the government, AES can now push forward on required permitting and associated project agreements to get the facility closer to operation.
