Michigan jobs will grow by 6 percent through 2026, according to state report

Energy jobs in Michigan will grow by 6 percent through 2026, according to a new report from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

The Michigan Energy Industry Cluster Workforce Analysis was released just in advance of Careers in Energy Week, an annual affair that draws together energy companies, as well as workforce and energy partners, with the state’s schools. Sponsored by the Michigan Energy Workforce Development Consortium (MEWDC), the event is a talent pipeline, funneling students toward careers in the industry — which, according to the data, that industry is going to need.

“While skilled workers for these positions are in demand, many students aren’t aware of the vast array of career opportunities that exist in this sector,” Marcia Black-Watson, industry engagement division administrator for the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity – Workforce Development, said. “That’s why for one week each October, educators and industry leaders join forces to spark students’ interest and encourage them with the theme Get Into Energy.”

This year, the event week is being held from Oct. 14-18. It draws together more than 50 partners, including DTE Energy, Consumers Energy, API, Great Lakes Energy, and the Michigan Electric and Gas Association. Along the way, they will host a contest for high schoolers meant to highlight energy industry careers.

“This is a great opportunity for industry, education and government partners to work together and raise awareness of the many career paths in the energy industry,” Tracy DiSanto, manager of Workforce Planning and Analytics at DTE and co-chair of the MEWDC, said. “Across the state, students will get a first-hand look at a variety of in-demand careers vital to Michigan’s future.”
