A collaboration between Michigan’s largest energy provider, Consumers Energy, and Sunverge, a Distributed Energy Resource (DER) control and aggregation platform provider, will push forward on a residential battery storage pilot.

The pilot will combine Sunverge’s real-team control, aggregation, and collaboration platform and energy storage technology with Consumers’ grid services. Together, they will test and measure how such storage could benefit Michigan’s electric grid and utility customers. Their pilot efforts will utilize a circuit in the area of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

“The Sunverge platform’s ability to co-optimize grid services is key to our decision to work with them,” Ryan Kiley, executive director of product development for Consumers, said. “In this pilot, we are testing to understand the different values that batteries could provide to the overall grid, such as potential investment deferral, resiliency, and reliability, while also providing backup of critical loads for pilot participants.”

The partners hope this could help Consumers achieve its goal of generating 40 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2040, among more general support for the changing grid.
