The Department of Transportation (DOT) has appointed 20 individuals to the newly-formed Lithium Battery Safety Advisory Committee (LBSAC), which provides input to strengthen lithium battery transportation safety.

DOT Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced the appointments on Tuesday. The committee was established in accordance with Section 333(d) of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018.

The panel is responsible for providing the DOT with information regarding new technologies and transportation safety practices while developing policy positions for forums and guiding activities increasing safety requirement awareness.

“The committee’s input will help the Department lead safety improvements in the transportation of lithium batteries to better protect shippers and travelers around the world,” Chao said.
