Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) announced plans last week for a $20 million upgrade to its electric transmission network in northeastern Indiana’s Grant County.

The Western Marion Area Improvements Project investment is meant to improve reliability for the area and bolster the electric grid for economic growth. Improvements will span about a five-mile region, wherein 34.5-kiloVolt power lines will be increased to 69-kV standards, and some sections of the line will be rebuilt. Other sections may be re-routed and be given new easements.

In preparation for the project’s summer 2021 start date, I&M will discuss the project with residents and landowners in the area during an informal open house on Thursday, Dec. 5. While the project itself will not be in question, local input could affect its final route.

The project is expected to conclude by Summer 2022.
