Georgia Power installs shield building roof for Vogtle Unit 3

Southern Company recently announced that workers set the roof of the Vogtle Unit 3 shield building in place at Georgia Power’s Vogtle nuclear expansion project near Waynesboro, Georgia.

The shield building roof weighs approximately two million pounds and measures 135 feet in diameter and 37 feet tall. The shield building will provide an additional layer of safety around the containment vessel and nuclear reactor to protect the structure from potential impacts.

Southern Company also noted that crews completed the first emergency preparedness drill for the Vogtle 3 & 4 new nuclear units. The drill included a comprehensive review of the site’s emergency preparedness plans and helped to prepare teams for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) evaluated exercise next year.

Vogtle 3 & 4 has more than 8,000 workers on-site, and more than 800 jobs will be available once the units begin operating, making it the largest jobs-producing construction project in Georgia currently, Southern Company said.
