The Gateway Expansion Pipeline Project went into service this week to provide natural gas for New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

The project comes online about 11 months ahead of schedule, just in time for the 2019-2020 winter heating season.

The Gateway project, developed and owned by Williams, expands off of the existing Transco Pipeline system. It will provide natural gas to serve PSEG Power and UGI Energy Services and will provide heating and energy for about 280,000 homes in the tri-state area. The conversion from oil to natural gas in this region is equivalent to removing approximately 590,000 metric tons per year of greenhouse gas emissions. It will also save customers up to $1,460 per year per household compared to heating oil.

“Natural gas plays an important role in helping to address environmental concerns about air quality and climate change,” Williams President and CEO Alan Armstrong said. “The Gateway Expansion Project is a great example of how affordable natural gas can help New Jersey meet its clean energy goals, and I’m very proud of our team for their focus and careful execution of this project, which enabled us to exceed our customers’ expectations and deliver in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.”

Construction on the expansion began in early 2019 and was originally slated to come online in November 2020. But the minimal impact on the community and environment helped speed the process. With this expansion, the Transco pipeline’s capacity has increased to 17.3 million dekatherms per day. The system includes about 10,000 miles of pipeline between South Texas and New York City, serving 12 states.

Williams, based in Tulsa, Okla., is one of the nation’s largest transporters of natural gas. Williams owns and operates more than 30,000 miles of pipelines system wide – including Transco.
