Consumers are increasingly interested in making their energy sources as green as possible, according to an insight report from the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC).

In their survey of more than 7,500 people, the SECC found that five things have dominated consumer interests heading into 2020, and most of them revolve around more sustainable energy behaviors. For one, consumers are increasingly ready to engage in renewable energy. They seek education on energy management, and, based on their insights, the SECC has also concluded that energy engagement is a path forward for both society and individuals alike. Segmentation remains critical and consumer expectations continue to shape the future of the industry.

The majority of those surveyed throughout the United States and Canada — 57 percent — preferred a time-varying rate, and 31 percent noted the likelihood of purchasing smart thermostats within the next year. Yet uncertainties remain, and consumers were not afraid to voice them: they were wary of upfront costs and decried a lack of clear information regarding their interests.

The report pulls from research conducted in 2019, case studies on consumer programs and a U.S. Department of Energy report on how electricity providers are utilizing smart meters. The SECC hopes it will aid industry stakeholders in better understanding their consumers so they can better tailor programs and services to them.
