Appalachian Power issued last week a second Request for Proposals (RFP) for up to 200 megawatts (MW) of solar energy resources.

The RFP has a minimum bid size of 10 MW, targets an operational date of December 2022, and provides the option of including battery storage with proposals. The company’s first RFP, which it issued in late 2018, did not result in any viable projects.

“By expanding the RFP, we expect to receive additional submissions from developers,” Chris Beam, Appalachian Power president and chief operating officer, said. “Having more proposals increases our ability to identify viable utility-scale solar projects that reduce customer costs and expands our renewables portfolio.”

Under the RFP, the company can acquire one or multiple solar facilities from bidders who meet certain operational and economic criteria. Projects must be in operation by Dec. 15, 2022, and qualify for the Federal Investment Tax Credit.

Projects must also be located in Virginia and be interconnected to Appalachian Power’s Virginia distribution system or PJM.

The deadline for submission of proposals is March 12, 2020. Any projects selected by Appalachian Power are conditional upon and subject to approval by the required regulatory authorities.
