SEPA launches catalog of smart grid standards with supporting test programs

Looking to shortcut the hunt for smart grid test programs, the Smart Electric Power Alliance released the Catalog of Test Programs last week, consolidating information on smart grid standards with available or certified conformance testing into one location.

The information is potentially invaluable for utility procurement staff, manufacturers, test labs, regulators, and other energy service and solution providers, who might need standards already tested by independent labs and providers. Along the way, SEPA hopes it will increase awareness and encourage the development of standards-based testing and certification for the evolving smart grid.

“Standards are the necessary first step towards interoperability,” Aaron Smallwood, vice president of industry solutions at SEPA, said. “The new SEPA Catalog of Test Programs, in combination with the SEPA Catalog of Standards, together provide valuable industry information about the maturity of smart grid standards and test programs. These tools equip industry stakeholders with objective information to guide their decision making.”

The catalog presently includes eight test programs that have certified more than 44 national and international smart grid device standards. The project was funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
