Duke Energy Florida plans to reduce customers’ bills in May to provide relief during the COVID-19 pandemic.
If the Florida Public Service Commission approves the request, a typical residential customer will see a decrease of nearly 21 percent on their May bill.
“We understand that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our residential and business customers are facing financial challenges,” Catherine Stempien, Duke Energy Florida state president, said. “During these unprecedented times, we want to find creative solutions to provide relief and continue to work hard to deliver the best possible price for our customers.”
Also, commercial and industrial customers will see savings ranging from approximately 20 percent to 45 percent – depending on the amount of electricity used.
It’s the latest step the company has taken to assist customers during this crisis. In March, Duke Energy said it would not disconnect any customer’s service for nonpayment to give customers experiencing financial hardship extra time to make payments.
Further, the company is waiving late payment fees and fees for returned payments for its millions of electric and natural gas customers across its service territories. For residential customers, Duke Energy is also waiving fees for credit and debit card payments.
The company said that customers should pay what they can to avoid building up a large balance that will be harder to pay off later.
Duke Energy Florida, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, provides electric services to approximately 1.8 million customers in the state.
